One of a boatload of shots from the shoot in February with Celtic rockers Marys Lane inside Cleveland’s Variety Theatre on Lorain Avenue. Everybody appreciated how special it is to shoot inside an old 1927-built Vaudeville theater, once the Grande Dame of Cleveland’s West Side. The guys were great subjects, too, naturals at posing and setting up their own shots.

Many thanks to Friends of the Historic Theatre board member Patrick Colvin, who is also the president of the Westown Community Development Corp. board, who escorted the band in and regaled everyone with stories of the theater’s ghostly happenings.

The corner of Moss and Davyhulme roads in Stretford, Manchester, England – about 7pm on a February in 2008. This corner is near my cousin’s place.

I did’t plan on doing any night shooting, but I couldn’t resist the tug telling me to do some work while I was there. You never know when you’re going to get a chance to visit the same place overseas. My Pentax K10D was pretty new and I love playing around with night shooting. It’s a whole different ballgame from daytime or in studio. And I really don’t use any structure to a night shoot except trying longer or shorter exposure times and just see what happens.

Don’t know why, but Manchester just feels like home. Really not sure why. I’ve relations in other cities in Ireland and England, but there’s a connection to this place I can’t put my finger on. I write this sitting on my couch in Cleveland, and still this shot makes me homesick.

Oh, and the corner no longer looks like this. Six months later, a new condominium development went up with frontage that juts out to where the camera sits. You’ll never see this place again as it is in this image.

A really quiet Saturday afternoon on Main Street, Newport, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Shot this Sept. 19, 2009, on tour with the Cleveland Irish Players, who were performing that evening in Parochial Hall. Notice the flower box. No matter the season, there seem to be some bright flowers on the streets of Irish towns. It’s a really nice touch, especially considering that it can get quite gray and dreary during the late autumn and winter months.

Also notice the phone box. No phone in it, though. In fact, you’d have to drive about a half hour to either Castlebar or Westport to find a payphone. Cell phones have killed the small town phone boxes. It’s a classic, though. Gives the street a bit of flavor.

If you’ve never been to Newport, it has a quality that’s a bit hard to explain. The place has character, a sense of history and a personality like an old friend. I’m not from there and my people aren’t from there, either. Still, I get homesick for the place. Would love to be sitting in Brannen’s with a pint in front of me and good friends beside me.

Night shooting can be a lot of fun – not just in getting wacky results like the image above, but it’s a lot of fun to just improvise who’s in the shot and what you want to do and if you have nontraditional light sources (like the car lights running down the street and the barely registering glow stick on a string in my daughter’s hand).

Just screwing around with a long shutter speed and a flash can yield some really cool stuff. Hence the photo above (6 seconds, f11 and ISO 400). A lot can happen in six seconds – after the flash froze us we moved out of those poses, the car came past the house with only its lights captured, and the tree leaves and houses across the street were captured nicely.

It’s common for us to think that cameras capture “reality” – actually, they capture a reality our human eyes never see. It’s pretty cool stuff whose possibilities are as endless as your willingness to discover. Gotta love it!

With Cleveland’s Browns and Cavs both playing as cold as the outside temperature, at least the city’s Indians play the bulk of their games in the warm rays of the summer sun. So I hope this image of a fiberglass Slider warms the cockles of your sporting heart.

No, Slider’s not waiting for the season to start, but the photo is just a reminder that pitchers and catchers for most MLB teams report to camp two months from tomorrow.

Oh, and somebody in the American League scheduling office evidently has a sense of humor. Cleveland opens its 2011 season at home vs. the Chicago White Sox on … April Fool’s Day – Friday, April 1, 2011.
